Services for Institutions – Historical and Alternative Photographic Techniques
Services for Institutions
We combine artistic practice with research expertise and many years of teaching experience. We work with museums, galleries, archives, art schools, universities and other cultural and academic institutions.
We provide workshops, lectures and training sessions, prepare technological reconstructions and facsimiles, and produce reference samples for research and conservation purposes. We also undertake individual and bespoke projects involving historical photographic processes.
All of our activities can be conducted in Polish or English, including educational programmes, lectures and workshops, research projects, exhibition-related work and collaboration with international institutions.
Workshops for Art Schools and Art Universities
We conduct workshops devoted to classical, historical and alternative photographic processes, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on work in the darkroom and laboratory.
The programme can be tailored to the profile of the school or university and to the participants’ level of experience. Workshops may cover specific photographic processes as well as their history, technology, materials and possibilities for contemporary artistic practice.
We place particular emphasis on direct experience of the photographic process. Participants not only learn how a given process works, but also have the opportunity to make their own photographs using historical materials and formulations.
Training for Staff
We provide theoretical and practical training for staff members of museums, galleries, archives and other institutions working with photography.
Topics may include the history and technology of historical photographic processes, their characteristic features, identification, and the methods used to produce historical photographs.
Each programme is developed individually, taking into account the institution’s profile, the nature of its collections and the specific needs of the participants.
Workshops for Visitors
We design and conduct workshops on historical photographic processes, delivered directly at the institution.
Workshops can be aimed at children, young people, adults, students or photography enthusiasts. We combine an introduction to the history of photography with hands-on experience of the process — from preparing the photographic material to producing the final image.
The workshops can be organised as standalone events or as part of an educational programme accompanying an exhibition or another event organised by the institution.
Lectures on the History and Technology of Photography
We give lectures on the history of photography and the development of photographic technologies, with particular emphasis on classical photographic processes.
Topics can be adapted to the nature of the event and its audience. Lectures may accompany exhibitions, conferences and educational projects, or form part of the teaching programmes of art schools and universities.
Facsimiles and Technological Reconstructions
We produce facsimiles of photographs using technology corresponding to the original photographic process, as well as reference works and materials illustrating how historical photographs were produced.
Depending on the project, we can reproduce not only the visual appearance of an image, but also the technology and characteristic features of the process through which it was originally made.
Such works can be used in museums and galleries as part of exhibitions, in educational materials and publications, as well as in projects concerned with the history and conservation of photography.
Research and Reference Samples
We collaborate on research projects concerning the history and technology of photography as well as historical photographic processes. We prepare reference samples that can be used for comparative and scientific research, enabling the analysis of the properties and characteristic features of historical photographic techniques.
Dr Radosław Brzozowski conducts independent research into the history of photography, with a particular focus on historical photographic processes.
Among his research projects was a project carried out at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, at the Faculty of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art, and funded by the National Science Centre (NCN). The project focused on the development of silver-based photographic processes in the 19th century.
The project resulted in his doctoral dissertation, “The Development of Silver-Based Photographic Processes in the 19th Century: A Description of the Characteristics of Individual Processes and Their Modifications”, for which he was awarded a Doctor of Arts degree.
Bespoke Projects
Not every project can be fitted into a predefined category. We therefore also undertake unusual commissions and bespoke projects involving historical photographic processes.
These may include the preparation of a specific reference sample, reconstruction of a photographic process, development of a photographic formulation, production of a facsimile, preparation of materials for an exhibition or publication, or a project combining research, educational and artistic activities.
