High-bloom hard gelatin 250 g is a professional, purified photographic reagent used in alternative photography and historical printing processes. It is a fundamental workshop material used for the preparation and refinement of paper substrates in hand-coated photographic techniques.
Unlike standard food-grade gelatin, this product features a higher bloom strength (higher Bloom rating), which translates into improved control over paper structure as well as greater stability of both light-sensitive and pigment layers.
Why not use food-grade gelatin?
Standard culinary gelatin available on the market is too soft for photographic applications. In practice, this leads to:
- unstable paper behaviour during wet processing
- excessive absorption of emulsions into the fibre structure
- the need to use large quantities of material
- reduced control over image sharpness and fine detail
As a result, the resulting protective layer does not meet the requirements of noble photographic processes, especially in multi-layer techniques.
Advantages of high-bloom photographic gelatin
High-bloom gelatin provides:
- Stable and even paper sizing – forms a controlled separation layer
- Improved sharpness and micro-detail – enhances image precision in pigment processes
- High working efficiency – lower material consumption with better final results
- Greater process repeatability – essential for edition work and workshop practice
Applications in alternative photography
This product is used in the preparation of substrates for both classical and contemporary noble photographic processes, including:
- gum bichromate printing (dichromate gum) – paper preparation and sizing
- pigment processes (carbon printing)
- modification and refinement of photographic papers
- preparation of supports for historical processes such as platinum/palladium printing and kallitype
Instructions for use
- Soak gelatin in cold distilled water and allow it to swell (approx. 10–15 minutes).
- Heat in a water bath to approx. 40–50°C, stirring gently until fully dissolved.
Do not allow to boil. - Apply the warm solution to paper using a brush, sponge, or glass rod.
